Being able to speak English is going to be a great advantage when you are planning to study abroad. Many universities in countries such as the United Kingdom, USA, Canada and Australia will want to know that their students have a good level of English and as a result will expect to see qualifications for this in with their application. The International English Language Testing System – otherwise known as the IELTS – is considered to be the most popular of the examinations that are accepted by universities. It has been used for more than 21 years and is still the one that is used as a marker for testing nowadays.

IELTS is used by over 8,000 organisations worldwide and all are happy to accept that the results they are presented with are accurate and will ensure that the holder of the certificate will be able to speak, read and understand English to a level that will allow them to study and work as a professional.

There are over 2 million IELTS tests taken each year and if this is the one you want to take, there are more than 800 centers where it can be sat, and these are spread over 130 countries. There are a number of organisations that own the IELTS and they are the British Council, Cambridge English Language Assessment and IDP.

A lot of countries such as Canada and New Zealand are now accepting this IELTS test as part of their general immigration program and there are two different versions about IELTS exam. There is the Academic Version and also the General Training Version. As you would imagine one IELTS test is used by educational facilities and those organisations that will be employing workers such as nurses and doctors who wish to work in a country where the main language is English and this will be the language they are expected to speak when working. With the other version of the IELTS exam, it is for people who hope to move to another country or will be working in jobs that do not require academic training.

There is not a particular score that has to be reached in order to be awarded the IELTS and there are 9 ranks that will be considered when scoring. Band 1 is for a non-English speaker and band 9 will apply to someone who is fluent and the level required for acceptance will vary from institution to institution. A score will be valid for 2 years but after that many organisations will want to have the test taken again in order to get a more up to date idea of the ability of the applicant.

There are four sections of the IELTS that must be completed – Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing and while the Listening and Speaking modules are the same for both tests, there are variations when it comes to reading and writing.
